Hot Dog Bun / Hoagie Roll


 Summer time = BBQ = Grilled hotdogs!

    Planning on having a good old fashion BBQ? Why not take it up a notch and make delicious buns to go with your brats, sausages and hotdogs? Load with sauteed onions and peppers and you have yourself a delicious meal your friends will rave about! 

What you will need:

5 Cups of flour

(Can be all white or a mix. I used 4 cups white and 1 cup wheat.)

1 Cup Semolina Flour

(This is optional, but Semolina flour is what is used to make pasta and gives bread a nice texture.) If you don't use the semolina, then add 1 more cup of flour.

1 Tablespoon Salt

4 Teaspoons Sugar

4 Teaspoons Yeast

3 Tablespoons Oil

1 Egg

2 and 1/2 cups Water  

 

1. Put all of the ingredients in a large bowl, or your mixer bowl.  

If you are using your mixer, attach the hook attachment. Otherwise start mixing with a spatula or wooden spoon, then use your hands.

2. Mix for at least 5 minutes with a mixer. If it is still dry you can add more water, but just add one Tablespoon at a time. You don't want your dough too be dry or too wet.

3. Mix/knead until you have a smooth cohesive dough.

4. Shape into a smooth ball.

5. Pour some oil into your bowl and roll the dough around in it to coat the outside.

6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap.

 

7. Place dough bowl in a warm place to rise (proof) for 1 hour. 

(I put mine in my oven on "proof", the "keep warm" setting works fine too.)

 

8. After proofing, the dough will have at least doubled in size. Knead the dough a few times.

9. Cut the dough in half, then half those halves, and half those halves. Continue the halving of balls until you have 16 dough balls.


10. Flatten a ball into a rectangle, then roll into a hotdog bun shape.

11. You can lightly sprinkle with garlic salt if you want. Loosely cover with plastic wrap.

12. Put the trays back in the warm oven for 30 minutes for a second proof.

13. When done proofing,  cut slits across the tops.

14. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place on a rack in the middle of the oven. Bake for 30 minutes. 

 If you want, you can rub the tops with butter.

Now you have amazing buns!
